No matter how busy or timeless you are, you should actually have some time allocated for your blog to update it daily, alternate days or at least once in every week, else it is not worth it to have your own blog in this blogosphere.

Good point that you have raised here forumguy! Updates actually impart life to a dynamic site like blogs. I prefer updating it twice or thrice weekly. As long as the blogs get updated frequently, it doesn't matter how much you write on it, you will be getting a stable traffic and ranking in search engines.

So how often is best? Is updating once a day really necessary?

I was hoping to update mine once per week....would that be too seldom to attract traffic and repeat visitors? I'm hoping to finally get my blog started maybe next week, and I want to make sure I do it right from the start.

Its not about updating your blog/blogs on a daily basis. It should be more regular however. I mean, you can even update your blog once a week, but you will be required to keep pace with that posting schedule to get good traffic with time.

And it's also about building a rapport with your readers. So you might feel like you would keep your readers informed and apologize to them in case something unavoidable holds you up and keeps you from updating your blog on schedule.

I would update at least once a week or more. It depends on the workload I have for the week. Sometimes, it is really difficult to update often especially during travel but nevertheless it is indeed important to update often to make sure the readers are not bored.
